10 Ways To Handle With Hyperactive Students

I am sure you are tired of yelling, shouting and criticizing. Did they work?I don't think so.They may cause even more problems. There are effective ways to handle with hyperactive students.Let's have a look at them:

1.Build positive behaviour towards them. This is the first and the most important step. These type of children need to feel they are cared because they need love and passion. Why? Because they are always the one being left behind, criticized, humiliated by their friends , teachers or even parents. So, don't miss any opportunities to praise them.

2.Ask parents to encourage the positive behaviour at home , too. Parents' attitude is also very important in that stage.

3. Ask them to remove the unnecessary things from desk and try to attract their attention by using big and colourful viuals.Give them tasks like “Can you turn on the light? Can you clean the boards?”

4. To get their attention write a topic-related sentence which includes their names.

5. Suggest parents to enroll their kids to a social activity like dancing and sport . Art is yet another good choice  as it helps the kids focus on and build self-control.

6. Give rewards like playing with playdough or doing something else they like  if they sit quietly and listen to the lesson carefully.

7. Teach relaxation methods to your students like taking deep breath when they get angry.

8. Make a list of good behaviours ,discuss them with the hyperactive students and take a promise to obey the rules. Put tick for the rules that they have obeyed and praise them , never put cross for the rules they haven't obeyed, just leave it blank and show that you trust them to manage to  accomplish the rules.

9. Ask them to write a diary to understand  their concerns, worries and interests better.

10. Give short and simple instructions , repeat them at least twice. Then ask them to repeat the instructions .

Students' getting bored in the classes is a very common problem. It may arise  due to the length of the lessons. We can't expect  students to focus on what we teach during the whole lesson. There are some ways to prevent it.
As an A plan, we can divide the lesson into two or more parts. Imagine your lesson takes 40 minutes. You can divide it 20 minute-parts. For instance, in the first part you teach grammar and in the second part, you can get students speak about the topics related with what they have learned in the previous part.
Transitions are also important to attract students' attention. While passing to another topic, you can get them listen to music, play games or just chat .If you think the topic will take the whole lesson, when the students start to distract and get bored, stop teaching ,do something different like watching a funny video. When they are dynamic again you can turn to your real topic and you will see they are listening to you more carefully.
Using mimics and gestures is vital as they play a big role in being students' focus.
They also help you to teach with drama.I think all the teachers should be given drama lessons before they start the profession. It is not common in ELT departments in universities now. But I hope it will.
Your voice level plays yet another important role in teaching. If your classes are very noisy, you constantly yell and shout at them, they will start to ignore you after a while.
Change your method, now. Just move your mouth as if you are talking. They will stop making noise and try to get what you are doing.
As the students are used to teachers lecturing loudly or constantly in same tone, this time, try to speak with a softer and calmer tone. It will work.
Sometimes change your voice tone unexpectedly and puzzle  them.
The students totally focus on when they are puzzled.
So ,why not puzzle them?

Ways to deal with problematic students

Teachers' one of the biggest problem is teaching to problematic learners, attention seekers and shy learners.Teaching to well-behaved learners is easy. The difficult part of the teaching profession is to be able to teach problematic, bullying and shy learners and also make them behave well and attract their attention.
We shouldn't forget that the learners especially the young ones see us as the role models. Therefore, we , as the teachers should support positive behaviours to be good models for them.
Teachers' one of the biggest mistakes is to criticize the learners in front of their friends. It is only a temporary solution and can cause more problems.Plus, we should never argue with the learners in front of the whole class.Because it can cause the loss of your authority.
The teacher can talk to these type of learners after class by using “I” language. “I was disappointed”, “I didn't expect that” or I trust you”.Now that the learners knows you trust them, they will try not to disappoint you again. You should be patient in that stage as you may manage your goal only after a few attempts.
Good remarks are also useful. When the problematic learner behaves well, He/she should be rewarded with good remarks like “ well done!”
The learners should love the teachers. You can gain their love by telling them they mean to you.
Not only does it help you to gain their trust and love but also supports respect.
As to shy learners, they may be more difficult than the others as they may have social fears such as speaking in public or being criticized by others. In that situation, the most efficient technique is to ask their opinions while discussing something, give presentation assignments and of course, finally, rewards like stickers, certificates or etc..
As to attention seekers, they may be really disturbing sometimes. In the first days of the school, you and your learners can make a deal to ignore these kinds of behaviours. If the plan fails, what the most useful thing to do is to ignore these disturbing behaviours. After a while, the attention seeker will realize that you don't care and he/she will give up.
Another advice for the teachers who have to deal with attention seekers, bullying ,or problematic learners ; unless it is your last option ,don't threaten them with calling their parents. We should always keep in mind that the ones who can build authority in the class is just the teachers.
Respect is only gained with the harmony of the authority and love.We should know well how to balance between them.
